Do you ever think of how our lives would be without social media? No. Right? The answer to this question is quite obvious and predictable. I have been a part of almost every social media platform, and it is easy for me to conclude its true importance. Social media, these days, has become the most prevalent form of communication. I believe, since the inception of industrial revolution, social media has turned out to be the immense medium to exchange and reciprocate the required information. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Skype, etc. help in personal communication and self-promotion or marketing.
Besides trading information and enhancing our entertainment sources, social media is also being used as a teaching tool by several well-known organizations and universities. As per the information that we have collected so far, in the year 2013 almost 41% of the American professors have operated social media as a tool to teach students.
Here, in this article, I have put my efforts to illustrate the true importance of social media in educating the youth. This explains how efficiently the use of social media reshapes today’s education system.
Online Classroom
Sometimes I wonder how easy our lives would have been if social media was introduced a little early. There is no need to take students’ attention away from their school work. It is the most prominent medium to reach most of the students available out there, that too in a more meaningful way. The information, that students miss to secure, is easily available and can be accessed in the most efficient manner. Studying online has more advantages than being a part of face-to-face teaching. The concept of traditional classrooms turns out to be insane when it comes to students unable to attend due to some reasons such as health issues, living in a remote area, etc.
Information Accessibility
Being a part of any social media platform enables you to access an information more efficiently. Not only it is appraised in terms of its obvious virtues, but also in terms of its hidden costs. Internet along with social media has enabled the students to access the information from different parts of the world.
Students are no longer aware of the difficulties and complications we used to face after we missed out on a lecture as it has become easy and convenient to acquire the information. This in turn requires consistent approach to discover the exact information one is looking for.
Think Independently
This is the most important feature of social media as it empowers students to think independently. The hidden features of social media leave students urging to learn more. Independent thinking skills not only permits students to become a great thinker, but also transforms them into a great leader. It creates an open environment where students put forth their ideas and get opportunities to implement them. This exposure helps them encourage Dissenting Views and Brainstorming.
Independent thinking develops creativity and curiosity among students. It also helps them become active rather than passive.
Industrial Exposure
I have usually come across several situations where the students exposed to social media are sharp and quick witted as compared to those who are not. Social media enables students to create their perspective and approach towards the world outside. Students pursuing professional education can easily adapt themselves to the environment of industries.
This, somehow, brings diversity in learning techniques that eventually help students gain experience in the relevant fields. They are now authorized to reach out to industry experts across disciplines and they are now being taught how to assess the source of information.
Building Social Credibility
Students, these days, are quite ambitious towards their career and very selective when it comes to choosing a career option. To have a proper and clear understanding of how one should take a step ahead to shape up one’s career, social media plays an important role. It helps students create a portfolio of their career and implement it. This is beneficial for the launch of students’ career as it signifies the learning process that has been evolved through social media.
Conclusion
These are just a few of the many influences of social media that have reformed the education system. Besides these positive impacts, social media does affect the youth in several ways. It is not possible for the students to generate the same accuracy in written words. Social media these days has become a major distraction that causes a decline in the overall performance of students. Well this was not it but covers considerable aspects.
